Job Description

This position is an integral part of the global Business Unit Hybrid Electrical Vehicles responsible for leading the Engineering function in Dearborn, San Jose and Guadalajara locations (Santa Anita).

The head of engineering will be measured on all levels of responsibility including HEV NA competitiveness, profitability, sales growth, development project progress, product performance and quality criteria. He/she will establish long and short-range goals and objectives for organizational and product development to support the global business with NA based OEMs.

Core Responsibilities
• Supervise and lead engineering managers who work in the design of all HEV products: Electric machines, Power­ electronics, Battery Controllers and Voltage Stabilization systems.
• Oversee the research and development of HEV products in all phases of the Product Life Cycle.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Continental’s procedures, policies and guidelines and applicable laws.
• Hire, train, and mentor employees.
• Establish detailed plans to accomplish goals with direct, indirect and Program management.
• Coordinate engineering activities of unit HEV NA with other units or organizations.
• Key external contacts include customers, contractors, Industry organizations (e.g. SAE), universities and institutes, government offices (e.g. DoE, EPA) component supplier.
• Design, development and release of HEV products for NA based customers.
• Implementation of robust product designs with full consideration of manufacturability internally and in supply base.
• Fast application and integration of generic building blocks to meet customer’s product and Continental’s business requirements.
• In alignment with platform, design, development and integration of customer specific solutions where no building blocks exist or fit.

• The head of Engineering will also provide engineering expertise and resources to other teams as needed and agreed to.

Additional Responsibilities:
• The head of Engineering will manage, support and provide direction and leadership to HEV NA engineering managers and directly reporting engineers.
• Candidate must possess a history of strong leadership, deep practical HEV component and systems engineering knowledge and a proven track record for timely project delivery, project management, cost control and customer satisfaction.
• This candidate must be able to work effectively in a team environment and will interface closely with the regional HEV BU leader, the global Head of Engineering, Global Segment Heads, Program Management, Finance, Purchasing, Sales, and Operations department.

Core Capabilities:
• The desired individual is someone who will bring knowledge and creativity to the position as well as have the discipline to drive results and follow established fundamental processes
• The candidate must have very good communication skills and develop and maintain relationships to the base development centers in Europe
• Introduction of engineering efficiency metrics and annual improvement rates
• Travel 30%

Basic Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, or other related discipline
• 10+ years of experience in automotive
• 5+ years direct management experience
• Minimum 3 years in a leading function role (Leading People/Leading Projects)
• Experience is design of automotive products and functions
• Strong Knowledge of Hybrid and Electrical Vehicles, sub systems and products
• Professional experience must include two years of experience in one of the following:
• Cross functional move
• Cross organizational move
• International experience

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in an engineering discipline
• Experience in design and application of Powertrain components and systems
